QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD
ASK
BEFORE YOU BUY A DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM
Ask these questions of your potential system provider
WILL YOU GUARANTEE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE
SYSTEM?
It is common that a customer has no idea how much air is being produced
by the system that was just installed. There is no concern when everything
looks new and shiny, but six months later when the ducts fill with material
and the filters are clogged, the questions come. A system provider should
balance the system and show you the velocity in the ducts. This should
be part of the operator training process. They should guarantee the velocity
in the vent lines at start-up, three months and six months later. The
system should be able to maintain transport velocity in the lines on its
worst day. Filters should be guaranteed for a minimum filter life. Typically
filters should last at least 2,000 hours (one shift, one year). A written
guarantee should detail life, and what will be done if the filters don't
make it. Ask for references of jobs that didn't work, and what was done
to fix it. Be sure to ask what the manufacturer of the machinery will
do in case of a system failure. "The only way to never have a problem
job, is to not build any!"
HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT THIS AIR VOLUME IS
CORRECT?
All (ducted) systems start at the hood. There are clear guidelines in
the Industrial Ventilation Manual, produced by the American Conference
of Governmental Industrial Hygienists. Data on hood design, transport
velocity and vent pipe system design are found in this book. References
should be available to support the system design.
DO YOU HAVE SIMILAR INSTALLATIONS IN THIS
AREA?
Many applications have special challenges that only experience will let
the provider know what to expect. Ask to go see some local installations.
Talk to the users and to the people who work with the system (i.e. maitenance,
operators, etc...)
HOW DO YOU SELECT THIS TYPE OF AIR CLEANER
AND WHY?
There are a number of air cleaners used in industry. Cartridge collectors,
baghouses, cyclones, electrostatics, oil mist collectors, wet collectors,
etc.. Your provider should be able to discuss the pros and cons of different
types and give clear reasons why the selection was made.
WHAT SERVICE DO YOU PROVIDE?
Are there service personnel available from the provider? From the manufacturer?
Do you stock replacement parts and filters? Are the people doing our installation
your employees, contractors? Are the personnel safety trained? What is
your safety record? How much experience do they have doing this work?
